Magnesium & DHEA

I stopped at the health store yesterday to pick up some hibiscus tea. For those who don't know hibiscus tea contains all the electrolytes our bodies need. It has a taste similar to cranberry and I love it over ice.

Okay back to the topic, while at the health store I mentioned that I was experiencing pain in my leg after meditating in the lotus position, known to us as Indian style. When I get up my leg locks up and hurts at the top of my thigh. I need to massage it and get it moving and it stops hurting. I thought maybe it was the joint, but no it is below the joint that connects the thigh to the torso. So, what is it?

I started taking turmeric three times a day and it helped, but I now started meditating on the couch. I was happy to see the owner's son there who is a RN, but uses natural healing methods. After determining that the pain was not arthritis he told me to try rubbing some magnesium oil on it. He said if it was a muscle, which he believed, this would help.

Magnesium oil? Never heard of it, he produced a 2 oz small bottle of it from Health and Wisdom, which I purchased. He also gave me a pamphlet about the oil which I took and read when I got home. The following is from the pamphlet.

Functions of Magnesium

Magnesium (the relaxer) is required at the center of every cell in the  body. When the cells are low in Magnesium, Calcium (the constrictor) moves to the center of the cell to protect the cell integrity. This causes  EVERY CELL in the body to be tight. It is little wonder we suffer from muscle stiffness, headaches, insomnia, rage, and more! Magnesium is required for the proper function of over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. Magnesium is needed to keep the brain, nerves, flexors, motor system functioning properly. Passion cool under the influence of magnesium. Negative passions such as hatred, temper outbursts, jealousy, quarrels, resentment, bitterness, hostility, selfishness, greed NEED MAGNESIUM!

                      Why Topical Magnesium?

"Most people are deficient in magnesium and transdermal is the best and fastest way to use it. Furthermore, trandermal is the only way which has been proven to raise DHEA."

"Except for patients with kidnsy failure, there is virtually NO illness which is not helped significantly by magnesium."

 ~ Dr C. Norman Shealy

Because the skin is the largest organ on our bodies it absorbs magnesium faster than ingesting it. All our nerves end on our feet by rubbing magnesium on the bottoms of our feet it is being absorbed through out the body. You could also use some in your bath water or soak your feet. For a foot soak use two to four ounces of magnesium oil for twenty to thirty minutes. Soaking your feet or in a bath for 6 days for 3-4 weeks will significantly raise cellular magnesium levels in most people. Note you can pour some in the palm of your hand and rub anywhere on your body, for men where there is no hair. Hair prevents the skin from fully absorbing magnesium.

  So, just what is DHEA?

This was not included in the information. DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone, is a steroid hormone, which converts into both testosterone in males and estrogen in females. It is created from cholesterol in the adrenal glands. At about 6 or 7 our bodies start producing DHEA. DHEA is at its peak in our bodies during our 20s, then it starts to diminish. By age 75 our bodies are producing 20% less than it did fifty years ago. Another way DHEA is lost in some individuals is by taking oral birth control, corticosteroids, or drugs that treat psychiatric disorders.

DHEA has come to be know as "the fountain of youth, hormone," "the super hormone," and "the mother of all hormones." DHEA is said to aid in the following in those over 26.

  • Anti-aging
  • Weight loss
  • Depression
  • HIV/AIDs
  • Alzheimer
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Inflammation
  • Immune disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • and so much more

  1. Have been a health freak all my life. The older I get the more I realise that what supplements we need change on a continous basis and also what kind of exercise we need. But yoga and meditation remains a constant that I have practised most of my life.

    1. I agree our bodies and needs are always changing. It is not just the supplements or the excersing, but also the foods that we eat. What I used to eat ten years ago my body now says no to.

I recently started meditating, I've done a little bit of yoga not a big fan. I have been told it is very good for you and therefore would like to do some a couple times a week. Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment.

  2. I was unaware that Magnesium is absorbed faster through the skin then when ingested. It would never have occurred to me to rub it into the bottoms of my feet and by doing so realize some great health benefits. Thank you for that.

  3. I am very much into turning to natural remedies first and I appreciate your disclaimer to check with a health care professional. You can bet I'll be checking with mine to see if this is something for me.

  4. Wow! This information comes to me at a perfect time! I had no idea that magnesium could be depleted to readily or could be restored so easily and transdermally. I think this could be the answer to recent leg and feet stiffness/cramping! Thanks!

    1. Low potassium can do the same thing and easy fix is drink two packets of EmergenC in a large glass of water. If it clears up you know it is low potassium.

  5. Very interesting. Magnesium helps me sleep better but then I am rewarded with diarrhea! Too much info? I wonder if I'd get the benefit without the side effect if I use it topically. I'm going to try it!

  6. I have never heard about hibiscus tea. I will check here in pharmacy. With the grace of God I am healthy women and try to keep my weight till a level that i have standardized for me. I will rush to exercise when it will reach alarming position. which I know that really bad habit.
I did yoga but not regularly. I personally believe that the prayer that we offer 5 times a day gives us a lot of meditation and some exercise of all the body parts. Normally I stick with prayer and know it is benefiting me in many ways.

  8. Many people don't realize they aren't getting enough magnesium! I was highly selective on my multivitamin, but now, after reading your post, I might consider getting some topical magnesium! I had no idea it absorbed quicker through the skin!

Also, is DHEA in most multivitamins? or is this something I should be taking in addition to my daily boost?

  10. Thank you so much for all these information! My hubby has had pain all his life due to his rheumatoid arthritis. It got worse now after his hip replacement surgery. He is taking a calcium-magnesium supplement but I guess it would not hurt if I rub magnesium oil on his thighs. Those group of muscles get so tight when he does his rehab exercises. I will be heading on to a Healthy Options store and look for this. Again, thank you for sharing.

    1. I recently was doing some research on arthritis due to a couple of friends dealing with it. A video I watched stated it could be healed naturally and contributed to nerves. More research is needed before I recommend anything, but I hope to be able to help my friends and others.

  11. Thanks for teaching about magnesium oil and DHEA. I used to take supplements here and there; then I would forget about them. Now I have a health practitioner who offers excellent advice, so he gives me recommendations that are made for me. I like to educate myself on all various possibilities, so your post helps a lot with that.

  12. Too funny to come across this post today, as I am healing from having arthroscopicmenisectomy surgery. I was on the same path as you several months ago, with my knee locking up after certain activities and I went to our health food store to get magnesium oil. I pretty much figured I had arthritis at one point. turns out, I had a tear in my meniscus. On the plus side, I have lots of down time to catch up on reading blogs.
