Eating for a Healthier Me

I have been learning about combined eating, and how long it takes for food to digest in our bodies. Surprisingly animal products take the longest with the exception of eggs which only take 30 minutes to digest. However, being a meat eater I have had to revamp the way I eat because it takes hours to digest. While various meats do digest at different rates they can take anywhere from an hour to five hours to digest.

Fruits takes the least amount of time to digest, so I eat it first thing in the morning. Since I started doing this I have found that my digest system runs a lot smoother. After my fruit, I have a veggie sandwich, my favorite is cucumbers, tomatoes, greens, with Vegenaise on Ezekiel bread. I also enjoy bowls of vegetable soup, yes even in the summer.Vegetables also digest at a fast rate, and if you want to have a salad with veggies and fruit, you are good to go.

If you are a regular reader you know I love cheese. Well, since it don't like me I have found a way to keep from eating it. It takes 3 hours, 3 hours, can you believe that? For cheese to digest. I have tried some vegan cheese, but sorry it is just not the same. I love the vegan butter, and Vegenaise, but that cheese just doesn't cut it. Not only that, but it also contains soy, and says no where it is organic.

Now because I do love meat and refuse to give it up I eat it for the last meal of the day. I have also cut back on portion size, except for fish. Fish is the fastest digesting meat it only takes 30-60 minutes depending on the type. As a matter of fact on Sundays for breakfast the southern man cooks up a bunch of Swai. Swai is a catfish from Thailand and is more tender than the catfish from the States. We love it with capers, yeah we eat fish for breakfast, and it is so good.

Do you eat veggie sandwiches? What is your favorite?

  2. Hi Joyce,
It was so interesting to read that you are adjusting what and when you eat certain foods during the day in view of the time they take to digest. This is such an important topic because so many of us suffer from digestive problems and poor nutrient absorption because we are not eating properly. Thank you so much for enlightening us at the Plant-based Potluck Party. I appreciate it. Sharing and pinning this!

    1. Deborah you point out an interesting point I did not think about. There is alot of digestive issues in our society today. However, I think that not only the order in which we eat our food causes issues, but also the GMOs. If people would stop eating GMOs, and eat for the digestive system I would be curious to see the results.

    1. The more I learn about our body the more I wonder why we didn't learn this stuff in science. I also wonder why doctors don't tell these things.
